On February 15, 2023, employees of VDL Nedcar learned through a press release that the management is working hard on a new future perspective in Born.
XBus and Evetta
One of the most important parts of that future perspective is that VDL Nedcar will produce for ElectricBrands in the future. It involves the manufacture of its light electric vehicles. ElectricBrands already has orders for approximately 16.000 vehicles for the XBus and more than 1.000 vehicles for the Evetta. That is very good news and a great development. For many employees, this offers more certainty of retaining employment.
MINI Convertible Electric for BMW
A new activity that fits under the first track, vehicle assembly, is the production of the world's first convertible with a pure electric drive, the MINI Cabrio Electric for BMW Group. The production start of the limited edition (999) of this model is planned for April 2023. It is a pity that this is limited, but we hope that it will be a great success and that even larger editions can be produced at VDL Nedcar!
Other Scenarios (three tracks)
As we have previously announced in our newsletters, VDL Nedcar is developing various scenarios to keep VDL Nedcar open beyond 2024. The diversification of VDL Nedcar's activities in Born has three tracks:
- assembly of vehicles for various clients
- sustainable mobility solutions in the Mobility Innovation Center (MIC)
- facilitating the growth strategy of sister companies, operating companies that are also part of VDL Groep
In order to transfer these broad activities to VDL Nedcar in Born, land has been purchased in recent years and processes for permits have been completed.
Sustainable future perspective for all necessary!
We believe that all possible alternative activities should be in line with the existing knowledge, experience and training of the current employees. It must be about suitable activities based on a sustainable future for all employees at VDL Nedcar. A training program must be started quickly for employees who do not yet have sufficient knowledge and experience for the above activities.
New social plan
Nevertheless, we are concerned about the employees who cannot participate in the new future prospects of VDL Nedcar. We want to consult with the management of VDL Nedcar as soon as possible to agree on a new social plan that is more focused on customization for everyone. Attention must be paid to retraining, further training and the possibility with a return guarantee to gain experience with new/other activities outside VDL Nedcar.
