Will I still receive travel allowance in 2021 if I work from home?

January 14 2021

Since the spring of 2020, many Dutch people work (almost) completely from home. Yet many of them continued to receive their fixed travel allowance: as part of the government's corona measures, employers were allowed to continue to do so untaxed. This measure applies in any case until February 1, 2021. The condition is that this is a fixed allowance that was already awarded by the employer before March 13, 2020. This month, the cabinet will determine what will happen with the travel allowance after this date.

What does that mean to you?

If you have been paid your usual travel allowance until now while you did not have to go to work, this may change from 1 February. If the measure ends, your employer may only reimburse the tax-free travel expenses that you actually incur. It is therefore expected that many employers will stop paying the fixed travel allowance as of 1 February 2021.

Would you like to read more about the different forms of travel allowance and the temporary corona measure that applies to them? That is possible in this article.

When will it become clear what will happen to my travel allowance?

The cabinet will make a decision in January. When they've made a decision, it comes up the website of the Tax Authorities and of course we will let you know.
