New Year's resolutions come in all shapes and sizes: exercising more, saving money and making time for loved ones. The start of the new year is the perfect time to do things differently - also at work. Do you want to expand your range of tasks, learn new skills or do you have a promotion in sight? The planning meeting with your employer is the perfect opportunity to reflect on this. Setting goals together helps you to look back with pride at the end of the year. But how do you approach such a conversation smartly? With these four you are well on your way
Tip 1: Take initiative
Prepare your planning meeting well: it is not just listening to your employer, it is a two-way conversation. You can also contribute something. In fact, most managers really appreciate it when you take the initiative yourself.
Tip 2: Check what you want
Think in advance which tasks you are currently performing, whether these are in line with your position, whether you want to change something, how you want to develop and how you think you will achieve this.
Tip 3: Take it seriously
Do you set the goals for 2025? Then make sure you formulate these according to the SMART method: specific, measurable, acceptable, realistic and time-bound. This way they are concrete and you know what you can work towards. Moreover, immediately make agreements for the follow-up and schedule interim meetings to keep track of progress. This way, your good intentions will remain visible all year round.
Tip 4: Make a distinction between what must and what can
You can record the development agreements in a Personal Development Plan (PDP). In this plan, you keep track of what you want to learn and what you must learn to continue to do your job well. Think of development agreements such as a training or course, but also secondment – to a client or to another department – or a form of coaching (receiving or giving). By drawing up a development plan, you can align the goals of the organization and yours.
