Get started during your retirement

July 06, 2023

Traveling around, reading your bookcase and spending time with (grand)children: that is often what we envision when we think of retirement. Yet more and more people choose to continue working. This has a lot of advantages: from the daily rhythm to extra income. But beware, there are a few important points to note. We list them.

'The retirement date' is a myth

Just to clear up a misunderstanding: there is no such thing as a retirement date. In this blog read everything you need to know about the retirement date.

Continuing to work after your retirement

Suppose you have a pension scheme with an effective age of 65, but you want to continue working for another year – possibly less than before. Then you can simply start your pension and also receive a salary. You can also postpone your retirement. In both cases, be aware of any tax consequences. Continuing to work after the retirement date in your current pension scheme is in principle also possible, but you usually no longer accrue pension.

In addition, you also have the date on which the statutory AOW takes effect. If you want to continue working afterwards, you must make agreements about this with your employer.

AOW supplement or AIO supplement

Do you receive an AOW supplement or AIO supplement in addition to your AOW benefit? Then your extra income from work may influence the amount. These amounts are intended to compensate for a (too) low pension income. If you start earning extra, your allowance or supplement will be lower or you may even no longer be entitled to this at all. Your extra income can also affect the healthcare allowance and housing allowance. On the website of the Social Insurance Bank (SVB) you will find more information about the impact of your extra income on your  AOW allowance en PhD supplement.
