You need to know this as a carer

December 01 2022

Does someone close to you need care? Then you help: out of care, but often also necessity. This is quite normal for most people. Even if that care becomes so extensive that we speak of informal care: long-term help for a family member or friend with a chronic illness, disability or other care needs. There are more than five million informal carers in the Netherlands. Our partner Senior Service can offer a solution for them. How? You can read that in this blog.

Informal care next to your work

As much as you like it, you often spend a lot of time and energy caring for a loved one. That can be very tough. Especially if you still work next door. That is why collective labor agreements often contain agreements for informal carers, enabling them to better combine their work and care tasks. For example about flexible deployment and working hours. So check your collective labor agreement and terms of employment carefully to know what applies to you.

Do not forget about these arrangements

There is no general reimbursement for informal care. However, you can often rely on certain schemes or reimbursements:

• Some municipalities help informal carers with a travel allowance or parking permit. Check with the municipality in question whether they have such an arrangement.
• Can't the person you care for use public transport independently? Then you can get one at Argonaut Apply for an OV-Bezorgenkaart.
• Does your child living at home need intensive care? Then you can go to the Social Insurance Bank apply for extra child benefit.
• Some health insurers offer additional reimbursements for informal care assistance. Check the policy conditions of your health insurance to find out whether you can make use of this.
• People who need intensive care can receive a personal budget for the care they receive. This can also be used for a fee to you.
