With this newsletter, I aim to inform you about the ongoing discussions between De Unie, other unions, and HR at Booking.com regarding the announced transformation. Key topics discussed include the Voluntary Leave Scheme (VLS), the social plan, and the next steps in the negotiations planned for 2026. Given Booking.com’s request for confidentiality regarding its own negotiation position, I can only share matters related to the unions’ stance in the discussions.

Voluntary Leave Scheme (VLS)
The Voluntary Leave Scheme (VLS) allows employees who are ‘at risk’ but not yet declared redundant to voluntarily leave the company. If the VLS is effectively utilized, it may reduce the number of employees facing forced redundancies. The VLS is separate from the social plan and will be introduced before the reorganization takes effect. During the 2020/2021 reorganization, the VLS was also widely utilized.
On November 28, 2024, we received the first version of the VLS, which was followed by both verbal and written discussions. On December 16, 2024, the second version of the VLS was shared with us. The unions have presented their position on several aspects of the VLS.
Our joint proposal for termination compensation includes one gross monthly salary per year of service, with any additional months paid pro rata. Additionally, we propose a one-time payment equal to three gross monthly salaries or, if this amount is less than €10,000 gross, a flat amount of €10,000 gross. Booking.com has not agreed to this proposal. We also propose increasing the payout percentage for unused vacation days and/or establishing a minimum (or baseline) amount. Booking.com has revised its stance on this matter. Employees offered a termination proposal are encouraged to seek legal advice. The unions want to provide additional legal support to employees alongside external lawyers. Booking.com has responded with a counterproposal on this point. Furthermore, we propose applying a pro-rata bonus payment for all employees until their exemption date from work, or if they are not exempted, until the termination date.
Social Plan
We received the first draft of the social plan from HR via email. On Monday, December 16, 2024, HR provided an explanation of the plan. The unions will review the document and consult with members and the Works Council (OR) at Booking.com.
Next Steps
Until January 8, 2025, we will gather feedback from members regarding the VLS and the social plan. After consulting with the OR, we will provide HR with a written response to the second version of the VLS and the first version of the social plan. Negotiations on the VLS and social plan will continue on January 9, 2025.
