The negotiations for the new Collective Labor Agreement (CLA) with ING will start on September 23th. With only three weeks to go, De Unie is preparing for these talks by polling the preferences of the employees.

In this informative memo, we provide our feedback from the third survey, the survey on Training and Development opportunities in the ING CLA.

Feedback survey Training and development opportunities
Importance of training and development

Training and development is an important employment condition in the CLA. To keep job prospects, whether within ING or outside, it is important to keep working on your employment value. Does ING offer the training and development opportunities you need? In the Survey Training and development opportunities, De Unie investigated whether ING employees feel that the CLA is appropriate in this respect.

Main findings

The Survey Training and Development Opportunities suggests that this employment condition might not be adequately set up now. ING says it provides a generous budget. But unfortunately, we see from the responses that many employees seem to be unable to follow the training they feel they need. Employees state their ambition to develop and grow. But there are many obstacles: administrative challenges at ING; there does not seem to be a budget for everyone; the work pressure is high. This can and must be improved.

Conclusions

De Unie concludes from this survey Training and development Opportunities:

  • The “leerrekening” is not satisfactory. The balance in the “leerrekening” is employees’ money, if they cannot spend it usefully then the CLA should provide another instrument. Budget not used for five years is returned to ING by the ‘leerrekening”.
  • The My learning platform focuses too much on e-learning and does not offer enough opportunities for in-depth knowledge acquisition. The survey shows a need for physical training and more specialized training.
  • The availability of budget for training and development is insufficiently transparent.
  • Employees lack guidance. This task is assigned to managers. De Unie wants to investigate how managers are trained to perform this task well. Because in the survey we see that the stimulation and motivation by managers is appreciated, but not always availabel. In addition, we see that employees who wish to focus on training aimed at a career move outside ING do not always want to discuss this with their own lead.
