Having trouble with your boss? Here's how to deal with it

8 November 2025

Good collaboration with your manager is important, but that doesn't mean it always comes naturally. Sometimes you're not entirely on the same page, or tensions arise that affect your work. In this blog, you'll read how to handle such situations constructively and professionally. Because as difficult as it may sometimes seem, initiating a conversation is often the first step towards greater understanding and better collaboration.

Prepare yourself well

Before you start the conversation, it is wise to gather your thoughts. Specifically note what you are struggling with and what you want to achieve with the conversation. Is it about a specific situation or a pattern? Also consider what solutions you have in mind.

Choose the right moment and the right tone

Plan the conversation for a quiet moment and ensure a neutral setting. Remain professional during the conversation and avoid accusations. Use “I” statements to share your feelings and experiences, such as: “I notice that...” or "I feel...". This prevents the other person from feeling attacked.

Call for help if needed

If you find it difficult to have the conversation on your own, you could consider involving a trusted colleague, HR representative, or an external coach. They can support you in preparing for the conversation or even act as a mediator. Many organisations offer this kind of support.

Wees voorzichtig met het delen van informatie

While it may be tempting to vent your frustrations to colleagues, it's important to be careful about sharing confidential information. This can affect the work environment and put colleagues in an awkward position. If you notice that multiple colleagues are facing the same problems, it may be worthwhile to approach HR or the relevant manager together.

Consider mediation

If discussions don't lead to improvement, mediation can offer a solution. An independent mediator will guide the conversation between you and your manager, with the aim of restoring the working relationship. Enquire with HR about the possibilities within your organisation.

Look after your well-being

A conflict at work can affect your mental and physical health. If you notice yourself developing symptoms of stress, consider contacting the occupational health physician. This can also be done preventatively. They can advise you on the correct steps and offer support.

Seek legal assistance if necessary

It is advisable to seek legal advice at an early stage. At De Unie, we can support you with this, even if you are not a member. We can advise and guide you through labour disputes. Our Service Centre is open every working day from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm on 0345 851 963 or at sc@unie.nl. We’re happy to help!
