De Unie, in your interest

Caring for a loved one can be very demanding, especially when you have to combine it with your job. On top of that, it can cause you a lot of extra worry and stress. For example, how do you arrange things with your employer and colleagues when you have to perform caregiving duties in the middle of the working day? How do you maintain a good work-life balance with all those responsibilities? And what if a conflict arises with your employer?

What should I pay attention to?
If you need to care for a close relative, for example in the case of informal caregiving, you may be entitled to leave. You can take emergency leave for very urgent, unexpected situations. Your employer will continue to pay your wages as normal. In slightly less urgent cases, you can make use of short-term care leave: for a maximum of two weeks, you will be paid at least 70 percent of your wages. Long-term care leave lasts a maximum of six weeks per year, but is unpaid – unless otherwise stipulated in your contract or collective labour agreement.
What does this mean for me?
The different types of leave can help you maintain a balance between your work and your caregiving responsibilities. Your employer cannot refuse short or long-term care leave, unless it would cause serious problems for the organisation. Always discuss the situation thoroughly with your employer. Clearly state your needs and what your employer can do to help you. Additionally, ensure your colleagues are fully aware of when you will be unavailable to prevent any dissatisfaction or irritation.

FAQ

Naast mijn werk verricht ik mantelzorgtaken. Van welke regelingen kan ik gebruik maken?
If you perform caregiving duties alongside your work, there are various arrangements to assist you. Depending on the duration and necessity of the caregiving tasks, you can make use of statutory provisions included in the WAZO (Work and Care Act). These include emergency leave, short-term care leave, and/or long-term care leave.
