Handing in things after your employment, how does that work exactly?

Dismissal at the office

When do you submit something?
You must be able to use things that you need for work up to and including your last working day. Then you submit them. How exactly does that work, when should it be done and in what condition do you return it? This is usually described in your employment contract, staff guide or (additional) user agreements. In the event of a dismissal by mutual consent, the agreements about the manner and time of handing in are often set out in the settlement agreement.

Avoid hassle afterwards
• Hand in your belongings, then ask your employer for written proof that you have handed them in.
• Do you hand in your company car? Then check with your employer that the car has no damage.
• Make sure that your employer has access to your handed in telephone or laptop: also hand in your access code or password.

Unexpected handing in

Does your employer ask you to hand in things that you did not see coming? Then ask what the reason is, to avoid misunderstandings. Under some circumstances you suddenly have to surrender all company property, for example in the event of instant dismissal; Your employer must have a good reason for this.

Keeping things after your employment
Sometimes it is nice to keep certain items after your employment, such as a telephone or car – especially if you have also been allowed to use them privately. In that case, you can discuss with your employer whether you can take over these items, and under what conditions. Do you make agreements about this? Then put this down properly and in writing.
