Do you want to relax after retirement, or would you rather stay active? More and more people are choosing to continue working, for example, a few hours a week. It not only offers extra income but also a sense of rhythm and social contact. Are you considering this? Then there are a few important things to keep in mind.
Make agreements with your employer
If you and your employer both agree, you can continue working after reaching state pension age (AOW) or retirement age. It's important to check what your contract or collective labor agreement says about continuing to work after retirement. If it states that you can continue working after retirement, your contract remains valid and your gross salary remains the same. However, your contract usually ends automatically when you reach state pension age (AOW) or retirement age. You can then agree on a new contract with your employer, with new arrangements regarding things like your salary and working hours. It's important to consider any potential tax implications.
What about retirement and continuing to work?
If you continue working after your pension or state pension has started, there are several scenarios:
- Receiving pension and salary
You can start receiving your pension and at the same time receive a salary from your work. - Postpone pension payments if possible
This results in a higher monthly pension payment if you retire later. - Continue working within your current pension scheme
You often no longer build up additional pension unless you make specific agreements about this.
Pay attention to your allowances
If you receive an AOW supplement or AIO supplement (for an income below the social minimum) in addition to your AOW benefit, additional income may affect the amount of this.
These allowances are intended to supplement a low income. Are you going to earn extra income? Then your allowance or supplement may be reduced or eliminated entirely. Additional income can also affect your healthcare or housing benefit. Check this in advance with the Social Insurance Bank (SVB). You can calculate your allowance yourself using the trial calculation of allowances.
