Working while you study yields a lot. A salary, nice colleagues, useful experience and an introduction to the labor market: all direct, but certainly also indirect benefits. Future employers will find it very interesting if you already have some work experience in addition to your diploma. However, you also have to pay close attention: you will come into contact with a number of rights and obligations, probably for the first time in your life. We will help you on your way.
Make clear agreements
Of course, as a student you sometimes have deadlines, lectures or exams. You want to have enough time for that. Therefore, make clear agreements with your employer about your availability and schedule. If your employer offers you an on-call or zero-hours contract, check carefully whether you are obliged to go to work if you are called up by your employer. Also make agreements about your precise position and activities.
Who do you conclude an employment contract with?
You record the agreements in writing in an employment contract - better known as a contract. Also discuss whether a collective labor agreement applies to you, in which you can also find employment conditions.
You can join a company directly or work through an employment agency. A temporary employment agency mediates between people looking for work and companies that need people (temporarily). If you do this, you enter into an agreement with the employment agency: they pay your wages for the hours that you work.
You can count on this
The salary you earn must be at least minimum wage - the name already gives it away a bit. The minimum youth wage applies to young people up to the age of 21. If a collective labor agreement applies to you or if you have agreed so, your employer may have to give you a higher salary. If you are ill and therefore cannot work, you are sometimes still entitled to wages. Whether you receive wages during illness depends on your type of contract. Please read this carefully before signing anything, so that you are not faced with any unpleasant surprises.
Student finance or another allowance?
Do you receive student finance or, for example, healthcare or housing benefit? Then it is wise to first check with the DUO (Education Implementation Department) and with the tax how much you can earn. You may have to pay back something else.
