Holiday pay during corona crisis

April 22, 2021

Are you always looking forward to the holiday allowance? That nice extra for the summer months. Every year you receive part of your gross salary as holiday pay - usually all at once in May or June, sometimes spread over the year. Did you know that you are entitled to it despite corona? So even if things are not going well with your employer and he uses the NOW scheme. Your employer can ask you if he can pay the holiday allowance later. Would you like to know exactly what you are entitled to and how your holiday pay is calculated? Read on quick.

Holiday pay during the corona crisis

If you are employed, you are always entitled to holiday pay. So also during the corona crisis and if your employer uses NOW support. Your employer will not only receive a subsidy for your salary, but also for the accrual of your holiday allowance. He must therefore simply pay your holiday pay in full and on time. Didn't that happen? Talk to your employer or contact our experts. In extreme cases, you can take legal action to claim the holiday pay. We will explain in detail how it works.

Later payment: only in consultation

Is your employer really unable to pay the holiday pay on time? Then he may pay it out later, but only if you have discussed this and you agree. We recommend that you agree in writing when you will receive your holiday allowance. You can also call in the help of our legal specialists.

How much holiday pay do you receive on your account?

You are legally entitled to 8 percent of your gross salary between June 1 and May 31. You will receive this in full in May or June, or paid monthly. Your employment contract, personnel guide or collective labor agreement may contain different agreements about the percentage, the accrual period or payment date. Your employer must specify your holiday pay separately on your pay slip, so that you can easily check whether the amount is correct.

These factors also determine the amount of your holiday pay:

    • Fixed allowances also count towards your gross annual salary, not including profit and year-end bonuses.
    • Is your salary temporarily lower, for example because you have been ill for a long time? Then you accrue holiday pay on the lower wage.
    • You earn more than three times the legal minimum wage? Then your employer may charge less or even no holiday pay on everything above. This must be recorded in your employment contract or collective labor agreement.
    • If you leave the employment, your employer will pay the holiday allowance due in proportion to the final settlement.
    • 8 percent of your gross salary leads to your gross holiday pay. You still pay tax on this. In the table below you can see approximately how much you have net left over. More information about the amount of the holiday pay can be found at the website of the Nibud.
