This is what you need to know about the Social Support Act

The Social Support Act (Wmo) plays an important role in the lives of people who need help with their daily functioning. Whether you are dealing with a disability, a chronic illness or age-related problems: the Wmo offers support to continue living independently and participating in society. But how exactly does the Wmo work? And how can you make use of it? In this article we explain everything.

What is the Wmo?

The Wmo is a Dutch law that obliges municipalities to offer their residents support where necessary. The aim of this law is to ensure that everyone can continue to live independently for as long as possible and can actively participate in society. This can be done, for example, through household help, transport facilities, home adjustments or guidance.

Facilities through the Wmo come in two forms:

  • General facilities: These are facilities that are accessible to everyone, such as a meal service or a community centre.
  • Customised facilities: These are facilities that are specifically tailored to your personal situation, such as home help, a stair lift or individual guidance.

More information about the Wmo law can be found on the website of Zorgwijzer.

How do you apply for Wmo support?

Applying for Wmo support starts with your municipality. Usually you can contact the Wmo counter or social district team in your place of residence. They will help you further with the application procedure. The process usually looks like this:

  • Interview: A municipal employee will discuss your situation, needs and options with you.
  • Kitchen table conversation: Often someone will come to your home to assess your situation and determine what kind of assistance is most appropriate.
  • Decision: Based on the application and the interviews, the municipality will determine whether you are eligible for support. You will receive an official decision on this.

You can find more information about the application procedure on the website of the central government.

What does it cost?

The personal contribution that you pay for Wmo provisions in the Netherlands is income-dependent and is determined nationally. For most people, a fixed rate per month applies, regardless of how much support they receive. This amount is collected via the CAK (Central Administration Office). It is always wise to ask your municipality how this is arranged for you.

Tips for applying for Wmo support

  • Prepare for the interview: Make a list of the daily challenges you face. This will give the municipality a good picture of your situation.
  • Ask for help: Are you having trouble going through the application procedure? Ask a family member, friend or advocacy organization to support you.
  • Know your rights: If your application is rejected, you can file an objection. If necessary, seek advice from a legal specialist.

How does the Wmo help with independent living?

The Wmo offers a wide range of solutions that enable people to live independently at home for longer. For example:

  • Domestic help: For those who can no longer clean and tidy up themselves.
  • Accompaniment: For people who have difficulty with planning, organizing or social contacts.
  • Home adjustments: Such as a stair lift, adapted shower or threshold aid.
  • Transport: Such as a mobility scooter or a taxi pass for adapted transport services.
