The General Surviving Dependents Act (Anw)
If you live in the Netherlands, you are automatically insured for the Anw. However, there is a catch: this does not mean that you will always receive the benefit. In fact, you are usually not eligible for a benefit from the government. Only under certain conditions are you entitled to a benefit if your partner, ex-partner or parent dies. The Social Insurance Bank (SVB) pays out this benefit. Want to know more about the Anw benefit? You can read all about it on the SVB website.
Supplementary survivor's pension
If you are employed or have been employed, your surviving dependants are often entitled to a supplementary survivor's pension through your employer's pension scheme. We distinguish between a supplementary survivor's pension on risk basis and on construction basisThis is already fixed, so you cannot choose it yourself.
Risk basis
With a survivor's pension on a risk basis, your survivors are not automatically entitled to a benefit. They can only claim this as long as you participate in the pension scheme with your employer. If you die after you have left the company, your partner will usually receive nothing. So pay attention to this if you change jobs.
Construction base
If you have a survivor's pension based on accrual, your partner will receive always survivors' pension if you die. So even if you are no longer employed and no longer participate in the pension scheme. We recommend that you regularly check the amount of your accrued pension.
Life insurance
Are you not employed or are you self-employed and do you want to leave your partner and/or children financially provided for? Since there is usually no benefit from the government, you will have to arrange it yourself. You can do this by taking out a death risk insurance. Get well informed about the possibilities and what is the best form for you.
