Retirement: good preparation makes a world of difference

January 01 2024

Want to take a break after your career? That is no longer what retirement is about. Life expectancy has increased: the period in which we can enjoy life fit and independently has become much longer. This also means that we have to approach our pension accrual differently – and take it a lot more seriously. Our pension experts tell you what you should pay attention to.

For later, but also now

It goes without saying that your pension is important for later. Together with your state pension and any other resources, such as your savings, it determines your financial position when you have finished working. So what trips you can make, where you can live and how carefree you can live? It all largely depends on your pension . But this also applies, for example, to the question of when you can stop working. And what happens if you unexpectedly become incapacitated or die. Your pension can therefore also be very decisive earlier.

Getting behind the wheel…

It's nice to have as much control as possible over such life-determining matters. Like when you retire. If you arrange it properly, you don't have to continue working until you reach state pension age – not everyone knows that. But if you only find out just before you retire, it will unfortunately be too late to exert any influence. The sooner you take control of your pension, the more control you have over it.

…and determine your own route

So start working on your pension, preferably as early as possible in your career. Ultimately, you only need two things: insight into your situation and an idea of your wishes and goals. Do you have a clear idea of the current state of your pension accrual and whether you are on the ideal schedule? Then it really doesn't take you that much time to think about it periodically. For example, every year, or if you have a new job - where you can then negotiate your pension accrual much more effectively!

It doesn't have to be difficult

Many people are held back by the maze of complex regulations and difficult laws. Understandable, but you don't have to. If you drive a car, you don't need to know exactly what goes on under the hood, do you? Of course it can help, but it is not necessary. That's how it works with pensions: as long as you know the things you need to get to your destination, it's good.

Therefore, do not view your pension as a difficult arrangement that is subject to many complicated systems and is regularly the subject of fraught political debates. Think of it as one of the capital pots that you put money in now for later, such as your savings account, house and any investment accounts. With the plus that it now gives you a lot of tax benefits!

Experts under the hood

We will come back to the car comparison. You don't need a deep understanding of how your car works to be able to drive it. But if something goes wrong, you as a driver will certainly suffer from it. With cars, it is very common to have a mechanic look at the problem. This should also be the case with pensions: there are people who know a lot about the subject and can help, inform and advise you well. Make use of that too!
