I will still work if my partner dies
If your partner dies while you are still working, your own income remains unchanged. However, you may be entitled to:
- Anw benefit: This is a government benefit for surviving dependents. Not everyone is eligible; check if you are eligible. For example, an employee or their partner is not entitled to ANW benefits if the relationship was not official (marriage/partnership/notarial contract) or if the deceased was not insured for ANW benefits.
- Survivors' pension: This is a pension accrued through your partner's employer. Check your partner's pension plan to see how much is available.
- Anw gap insurance: Some employers offer supplementary insurance to cover the difference if you're not entitled to an Anw benefit. Check your partner's collective labor agreement (CBA) or pension plan to see if this insurance applies.
I am retired when my partner dies
Are you retired? Then your income will change in the following ways:
- AOW benefit: Did you live with someone or were you married? Then you received a lower AOW benefit as part of a joint household. After your partner's death, you'll receive a higher AOW benefit as a single person.
- Survivors' pension: In addition to your own pension, you may be eligible for a survivor's pension. This depends on your partner's pension plan.
