Partner died, what does that mean for your income?

08 September 2023

Major life events often influence your financial situation. Living together, getting married, having children. The death of your partner also belongs in this list. The impact of this is of course unimaginable, also in terms of your income. Sad, but also wise to look into. Many people in that situation are unpleasantly surprised by the fact that they do not receive financial compensation or benefits. Our pension experts will help you prevent this. They tell you exactly what you can count on.

Note: it is called relativesretirement, but you are often also entitled to it if you and your partner have not yet reached state pension age. So look this up carefully.

I will still work if my partner dies

Of course, nothing will change about your own income. You are sometimes entitled to an Anw benefit or survivor's pension - you can read more about this in this article. In addition, your partner may have additional ANW shortfall insurance. This is a supplement to the pension scheme through the employer and compensates for an insufficient Anw benefit. Check your partner's collective labor agreement or pension scheme to find out whether there is additional ANW shortfall insurance.

I am retired when my partner dies

Do you live together or are you married? Then you will receive a lower AOW benefit than if you are single. Your AOW benefit will therefore be higher if your partner dies. There will possibly be one survivor's pension on top of your own pension benefit, of course.

Gain insight into your future

It is always wise to prepare for your retirement in time, but it is absolutely good to know in advance what you can count on if your partner unexpectedly dies. With some help – for example from our pension specialists – you can calculate very well what your income would be in such a situation. And is the amount too low? Then you can still take action now. For example, by saving more or taking out life insurance.
