If you're struggling with over-fatigue or burnout, it's crucial to get some rest. A vacation can help with that. It can feel awkward to not work, but still enjoy the sun. That's understandable, but it's allowed – as long as you arrange it properly with your employer. We'll explain what to look out for.

How do you request vacation when sick?
You can submit your vacation requests as usual. You can often find instructions on how to do this in your employee handbook or company regulations. Your employer is usually required to respond to your request within two weeks.
- Note: Your employer may refuse your vacation, but only for a good reason, for example if your vacation would hinder your recovery or reintegration.
- To assess this, the employer can call in the company doctor.
The role of the company doctor
The occupational health physician will assess whether your vacation plans will hinder your recovery or reintegration. If not, you are permitted to take vacation, unless the employer has another compelling reason to reject your request, for example, if your absence will cause staffing problems at work.
What if your vacation hinders your recovery?
If the company doctor indicates that your holiday plans are detrimental to your reintegration, your employer can refuse your holiday request on medical grounds.
What about your vacation days?
During illness, your employer may only deduct vacation days if you go on vacation and explicitly agree to it. If you are actually taking vacation, it's reasonable to deduct vacation days for that as well. After all, you accrue vacation days during illness. Make clear agreements about this before your vacation to avoid misunderstandings.
No reintegration obligations during holidays
During your holiday, you don't have to adhere to your reintegration obligations. This means you'll have some time off from appointments with the company doctor or any work related to your recovery. This gives you the chance to truly relax and recharge – an important step towards your recovery.
