The workplace is a place where you collaborate, achieve goals, and—sometimes unexpectedly—fall in love. But how do you handle a relationship with a colleague? And is it even allowed? In most cases, the answer is yes, but there are important considerations to keep in mind.

What does the law say?
Legally, a relationship is permitted in the workplace. Your employer can't prohibit it, but they can establish policies on how to handle it. Consider agreements and guidelines regarding:
- Reporting a relationship.
- Preventing conflicts of interest
- Professional behavior in the workplace
- No preferential treatment or appearance thereof
- Preventing awkward situations in the workplace.
This policy must be laid out in company regulations, an employee handbook, or a code of conduct. Ask for these yourself if you're unsure about the rules within your organization.
Relationship with a colleague at the same level
If you have a relationship with a colleague who works at the same job level, this is allowed as long as:
- Your work does not suffer.
- It does not cause awkward situations in the workplace.
Is work suffering or are problems arising? Then your employer can intervene, for example, by transferring one of you to a different department. However, this is only allowed for a valid reason. Consider protecting productivity.
Relationship between manager and employee
If the relationship exists between colleagues at different job levels, caution is especially important. These kinds of relationships can lead to:
- Skewed power relations: This includes access to sensitive information that affects others. The manager has a role to play in this.
- Insecurity among colleagues: Others may think that there is preferential treatment.
Be open about the relationship and report it as soon as possible. Failure to do so can result in serious consequences, such as warnings, reassignment, or even termination if there's a violation of company policy.
What if the situation becomes unsafe?
Workplace romance can lead to unsafe or unpleasant situations, such as:
- Gossip and tensions between colleagues.
- Fear of unfair treatment.
In such cases, the employer must set clear boundaries and intervene. Do you feel unsafe? Then you can always contact a confidential counselor. They will listen to your story and help you take the right steps. Save messages, emails, and other evidence in case you decide to report the incident to your employer.
