De Unie, in your interest

Informal care can be very heavy, especially if you have to combine it with your work. Moreover, it can cause you a lot of extra worries and tensions. For example, how do you arrange things with your employer and colleagues if you have to perform care tasks in the middle of the working day? With all those responsibilities, how do you keep a good work-life balance? And what if a conflict arises with your employer?

What should I pay attention to?
If you have to care for a loved one, for example in the case of informal care, you may be entitled to leave. You can take emergency leave for very urgent, unexpected situations. Your employer will continue to pay your wages. In slightly less urgent cases you can use short-term care leave: you will be paid at least 70 percent of your salary for a maximum of two weeks. Long-term care leave lasts a maximum of six weeks per year, but is unpaid - unless otherwise stated in your contract or collective labor agreement.
What does this mean for me?
The different types of leave can help you to maintain the balance between your work and your care tasks. Your employer may also not refuse short-term or long-term care leave, unless it would cause serious problems for the organization. Always discuss the situation with your employer. Make it clear what you need and what your employer can do to help you. In addition, make sure that your colleagues know exactly when you are temporarily unavailable to prevent any dissatisfaction or irritation.
