Your internship allowance and the tax: that's it

February 01 2023

Doing an internship is an excellent way to discover where your talents lie, to make a good impression and to build on your CV. For many people it is the first time they have been paid for serious work. Which also makes it the first time they have to deal with the Tax Authorities - and that while you will soon have to file a return for 2022. What exactly should you take into account? We explain!

Internship allowance is wages

The law does not stipulate that you are entitled to an internship allowance. In many collective agreements and mutual agreements, yes. And if so, your allowance counts as wages: money you earn by working. And so you have to pay tax on it – just like with other forms of income.

Tax on your internship allowance

The internship allowance that you agree upon is a gross amount. So tax is deducted from this. This is usually done by your employer or internship company. You will then receive a net amount on your account. You can do whatever you want with this.

Everyone must file an income tax return every year, this is possible from 1 March. With this, the Tax and Customs Administration checks whether you have paid enough tax, given your income and assets. Often the conclusion is that it is correct, but in some cases you have to pay extra or you get something back. The Tax and Customs Administration already fills in a lot of data. However, it is important to check everything carefully. You do not have to pay tax on income such as student finance or allowances.

Payroll tax credit

You can choose to have the payroll tax credit applied, so that less tax is withheld. But beware: you can only do this with one employer. So do you have a (side) job in addition to your internship? Then you can only have the payroll tax credit applied to one, preferably where you receive the highest income.
