Do you believe you deserve a higher salary? Perhaps because you've been given more responsibility or have acquired new skills? Then it's time for a salary negotiation. But to be successful, good preparation is crucial. Use this step-by-step plan to increase your chances of success.

1. Research what a suitable salary is

Your expected salary depends on factors such as your position, experience, responsibilities, and the demand for your expertise. The sector, region, and type of company also play a role.

2. Use tools such as:

  • Salary compass of Intermediair: useful for insight into salaries within your industry.
  • Salary check from Loonwijzer: This tool is even more extensive and detailed.

Collective labor agreements also provide salary scales with minimum and maximum salaries, or even steps where you can grow. This demonstrates how much room there is for growth.

3. Choose the right moment

The timing of negotiations can make a big difference. For example, start after a positive performance review, the successful completion of a project, or when you've been given additional responsibilities. Timing is essential.

4. Prepare your arguments

Explain why you deserve a raise. Justify your request with:

  • Concrete achievements: What have you achieved for the company?
  • Additional responsibilities: Have you taken on more tasks?
  • Market-conform figures: Show that your salary is no longer up to date.

Track your successes and be prepared to share examples.

5. Dare to ask

Many employees avoid asking for a raise for fear of being told no. But if you don't ask, you certainly won't get one. Feeling nervous? Pretend you're negotiating for someone else.

If you still get a "no," ask what's needed to get a raise in the future. Make concrete agreements and put them in writing.

6. Aim higher

Don't immediately mention your ideal salary, but ask for a bit more to leave room for negotiation. Don't forget that secondary benefits can also be valuable. Consider:

  • Additional vacation days
  • A company car or bicycle
  • A bonus scheme

If you don't reach your desired salary, ask if it can be reviewed again after six months.
