Care leave can be a solution if you need to temporarily care for a sick family member, partner or other loved one. But how exactly does care leave work? In this article we explain what care leave is, what types there are and how you can arrange this in your work.
What is care leave?
Care leave gives you the opportunity to combine work and care tasks when this is temporarily necessary. The Work and Care Act regulates this form of leave, which is roughly divided into two categories:
- Short-term care leave
You can take a maximum of twice the number of hours you work per week within a period of 12 months. For example, do you work 32 hours per week? Then you can take 64 hours. During short-term care leave, you will receive at least 70% of your salary. - Long-term care leave
This leave is intended for situations in which the need for care persists for a longer period, for example in the case of a seriously ill family member. You can take up to six times the number of hours you work per week in a period of 12 months. This leave is usually unpaid, unless your collective labor agreement or employment contract stipulates otherwise.
Paid vs. Unpaid Leave: What Are the Differences?
The choice between paid and unpaid leave often depends on the urgency and duration of the care tasks. Short-term care leave offers financial support because you keep part of your salary. Long-term care leave, on the other hand, gives you more time, but you often have to do it without income.
Please note: some collective labour agreements and employers offer additional agreements, such as partial payment or extra days off. Always check your collective labour agreement or employment conditions.
How do you apply for care leave?
- Consult with your employer
Discuss your situation and the possibilities. Clearly indicate whether you need short-term or long-term leave. - Written request
Often you have to submit a written application and prove that your leave is necessary. This can be done with a statement from a doctor or other evidence. - Check your collective labor agreement or company regulations
This contains specific rules that apply within your organization.
What else should you pay attention to?
- Financial impact
Calculate what a period of unpaid leave means for your income. - Impact on your work
Discuss with your employer how your absence will be covered and whether you want to remain involved in important developments. - Alternatives
Can you work more flexibly, such as partially from home or with adjusted hours? This can be a solution if full leave is not feasible.
