Financial support for working caregivers: what you need to know

08 August 2025

Combining work and caregiving can be a heavy burden, both mentally and financially. Fortunately, in the Netherlands, there are programs and subsidies available to support caregivers. In this blog post, we discuss what financial assistance is available, how to apply for caregiver appreciation, and why financial advice is important.

Subsidies and allowances for informal caregivers

Caregivers are entitled to various types of support, depending on their situation. Here are some options:

  • Caregiver compliment: Municipalities are required to provide an annual caregiver allowance to caregivers. This appreciation can take the form of a cash prize, gift voucher, or other token of appreciation. Check with your municipality to find out how to apply. More information is available on the Dutch government website.
  • Personal Budget (PGB): With a personal budget (PGB), those in need of care can purchase their own care, for example, from family members who provide informal care. This offers flexibility and financial support for the informal caregiver.
  • Tax benefits: Caregivers may be eligible for deductions, such as specific healthcare costs. Note that this depends on your income and expenses. Check here to see if you qualify.
  • Wmo support: Through the Social Support Act (Wmo), informal caregivers can receive assistance, such as home help or compensation for home modifications. Contact your municipality to see what's available.

How do you apply for informal care appreciation?

The process for applying for informal care allowance varies by municipality. Generally, you'll follow these steps:

  • Inquire with the municipality: Visit your municipality's website or call their information number. You'll find details on how to submit the application and what documents are required.
  • Complete the application form: Complete the form and attach any supporting documents, such as a statement from the person requiring care.
  • Waiting for approval: Municipalities often process applications within a few weeks. If you're entitled to compensation, you'll usually receive it around a fixed time each year.

The importance of financial advice for caregivers

Caregivers often face complex financial situations. Consider reduced income due to working fewer hours, additional healthcare costs, or the impact on your pension. This is why financial advice is crucial:

  • Insight into allowances and subsidies: A financial advisor can help you make optimal use of available allowances.
  • Planning ahead: Caregiving can impact your career. With good planning, you can ensure your financial stability in the long run.
  • Pension and survivor benefits: Working caregivers sometimes accrue less pension. Get advice on how to supplement this, for example, through voluntary pension plans.
