No matter how important and enjoyable your career is, there is a good chance that you are looking forward to retirement. Maybe even so bad that you want to start it earlier. The good news: that is possible, thanks to the Early Retirement Scheme (RVU). Not everyone can use it. And even if you meet the conditions, your employer must cooperate – he doesn't have to. We have listed what you need to know about the RVU.
What is the RVU?
The Early Retirement Scheme (RVU) makes it possible to retire earlier. Your employer will then pay you a monthly or one-off amount to bridge the period from retirement until you reach state pension age. The scheme runs until the end of 2025. This means that you can use it if your AOW date is 31 December 2028 or earlier - but only if it is stated in your collective labor agreement or you agree with your employer. So maybe it's good to take a closer look at your plans for this year.
How exactly does the RVU work?
Your employer can pay you a payment without penalty (but not tax-free) from your retirement until your retirement. This benefit can be paid in monthly installments or in one go. This allows you to bridge the period until your state pension age. For 2023, the maximum amount that your employer can pay out is € 2.037 gross per month. You can possibly supplement this amount from your own resources or by starting your pension earlier. Please note: you are not entitled to an RVU scheme; This must be included in the collective labor agreement or you must make an agreement about this with your employer.
If you make use of the RVU scheme, your employment will end. This has consequences for your survivor's pension. If you die unexpectedly, your partner will receive less – and possibly no – survivor's pension at all. So be well informed about all the consequences before you make a decision about the RVU.
