VDL Nedcar: Notice of suspension of consultations on new social plan

May 04, 2023

To our great surprise, the management of VDL Nedcar suspended consultations for a new social plan for an indefinite period on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

Surprised and disappointed!

Last week we negotiated with the employer in a very constructive manner and in a good atmosphere about the content of a new social plan. On that basis, we were positive about the follow-up process.

In the beginning of the last meeting we have a new proposal presented to the employer. The content of this was drawn up after consultation with our executives. In response, the employers proposals presented to us.

After studying this, we very quickly saw that the employer's new proposals fell far short of our requirements in accordance with the mandate of our members. Based on this, we once again asked the employer to come up with better proposals so that we could negotiate further.

Missed opportunity

Unfortunately, the employer did not respond to this because they considered the distance between the proposals of the trade unions and their offer too great. To continue talking now, according to the employer, would be of no use. On this basis, the employer has decided to suspend the consultation without setting a term.

No final offer, but suspend consultation

In addition, the employer stated that their proposals are not a final offer. We have also indicated that we have not submitted a final offer to the employer. In our opinion, we could continue with the consultations to reach a result. Unfortunately, our attempts to keep the employer at the negotiating table to prevent further escalation of the current situation in the workplace have not helped.

Escalation of relations/wildcat strike

What we feared, the escalation of unrest in the workplace, took place last Wednesday, May 3, 2023 in the form of a "wildcat strike". Colleagues in the factory have laid down work in the morning. We have a great deal of understanding for the attitude of these colleagues, but it was not organized by the trade unions. For that reason, we could not formally support and take over this strike. There is a legal procedure for this and we must apply it exactly before we can carry out any kind of actions at a company.

How further?

Now that we cannot continue the consultations for a new social plan, we must discuss with our members how to proceed. That's why we want one online members' meetings May 8 at 17.00 p.m. If more than a quarter of the total number of members could be present at this meeting on that day, we can also hold a ¾ meeting at the same time to gauge the willingness to act among our members if necessary.

Members have received an invitation to register. After completing the form, they will receive a confirmation of receipt with the link to join the meeting.

¾ meeting
