The collective labor agreement negotiations at ING went differently than in other years. The consultations were characterized by a rigid attitude on the part of the employer, great involvement of the members and a sharp position on the part of the employer De Unie. Unfortunately, this did not lead to a supported collective agreement. The employer has made a final offer.
Stemming De Unie
De Unie called on members to vote on April 28, 2023. The members of De Unie made a clear statement. The vast majority of voters (78%) believe that De Unie does not have to sign this ING collective agreement. The main reasons given for voting against are:
- Salary increase is too low
- ING does not value the employees
- Solidarity
A minority of members (18%) think so De Unie must sign this collective agreement. They also put forward different arguments:
- The conflict is taking too long
- Personally satisfied with the offer
- The focus should be on the next collective bargaining
Many members have taken the trouble to explain their vote in detail. Due to the large number of votes, it is not possible to answer everyone individually. I would therefore like to emphasize that the explanations of vote are also processed anonymously and used for the evaluation of the negotiations. Anyway, thanks for the effort.
What now
The members of De Unie have spoken. A large majority of the members consider it important that a clear signal is sent to the other collective labor agreement parties. On Monday 15 May 2023, ING's management was informed in writing about the outcome. This post you can here .
The executives will evaluate the collective labor agreement process. The aim of negotiations is to achieve a collective agreement that the members are satisfied with. We have learned a lot from these collective bargaining negotiations. But we should certainly also examine what needs to be improved in the next negotiations.
It has also been shown that union membership matters. The members of the trade unions ultimately have the final say when it comes to collective terms and conditions of employment at ING. In the near future, we will certainly invest a lot of time in enthusing colleagues to join De Unie. Because more members means more influence.
Quarterly figures Q1 2023
The management of ING published the results for the first quarter of 11 on Thursday 2023 May. Compared to the first quarter of 2022, profit has risen again. It's great that the company continues to develop so well. And just like last year, the shareholders first benefit from this. EUR 1,5 billion will be used for ING's share buyback programme. We regret that despite these good performances, the collective labor agreement process was so difficult. There is for De Unie still a lot of work to do.
