ING: Collective Labor Agreement negotiations

December 14 2022

The end of the year is fast approaching. The last weeks of December are always busy periods for a company. Most people want to have Christmas and the New Year off, spend the holidays with family, friends and loved ones. ING employees are no exception. We understand that the workload is high and that you are working towards your holiday. We would have loved to give you a nice collective agreement before the current collective agreement has expired. And despite the fact that we are not sitting still and are working hard to change ING's mind, it does not look like we will succeed in time.

Are you not yet receiving our ING news updates? Then sign up quickly.

December 20 2022

Trade organizations want to close 2022 in a memorable way and still give you something to say. That is why we invite you to close the year with us on a positive note with glühwein, oliebollen and an overall Christmas atmosphere. We place a Christmas tree, in which you can hang beautiful collective Christmas wishes. We can't go all over the country, the Christmas market is in Amsterdam for Cedar. But also ING people outside Amsterdam; the ING houses and the offices in Leeuwarden, Rotterdam, Ede and the rest of the country are important to the trade unions.

That is why we will ask everyone on December 19, 2022 to collectively participate in the Christmas promotion and help from a distance to make December 20 a memorable day. Keep an eye on your mailbox that day!

We look back

From the beginning of 2022, signals were already coming in about the consequences of the two-year zero line, the many cutbacks in secondary employment conditions. Never before had so many people responded to our collective bargaining surveys. The icing on the cake was a sky-high inflation and the decline in purchasing power is felt not only by low incomes but also by middle incomes. In 2022, you and your colleagues stood up to stand up en masse for your collective employee interest. Some also stand up in solidarity with colleagues who are hit harder. After all, together you are ING.

  • Some 1300 employees contributed to the white paper.
  • 6766 employees signed the petition.
  • Approximately 1000 employees came to the petition presentation and the union action in Amsterdam and Leeuwarden.
  • And countless employees spoke and speak out clearly on the intranet and Yammer.

Never before have so many ING employees expressed themselves so clearly in public. This is historic, alarming and telling!

What have trade unions done? We listened carefully to you and your colleagues, we joined forces, organized activities with you, conveyed your opinion to ING and to the outside world.

We have also made it clear that we want to reach an agreement with ING in good consultation and constructively.

  • We are working with ING to prepare for the new pension legislation. This consultation is conducted in a good atmosphere and with mutual respect.
  • Trade unions have regular periodic consultations with ING, where we raise issues that are important to employees.
  • In order to get the collective labor agreement negotiations moving, we asked the independent chairman to sound out the parties. This conversation was on December 9. We had a good conversation with the chairman and explained our views and concerns once again. We have once again made it clear why ING's current offer is below all levels. Subsequently, the chairman spoke with ING. It would be nice if ING would change its mind now, but the signals so far are that they point to the opposite. We expect the advice of the chairman one of these days. As it stands now and the signals we are getting indicate that we will have to use harder means of pressure in 2023.
  • And because we are concerned about the state of affairs at ING, we have asked the Supervisory Board to take a closer look at the corporate culture. You can read the response of the Supervisory Board here .

We look ahead

We will resume the process in 2023. Trade unions pursue a two-track policy as far as the collective labor agreement is concerned. Track 1, our preferred track, is aimed at good constructive consultation with ING. But we have to take into account that ING is different and that we are on a dead end. So we are also working on track 2. If ING's position does not change, the points will switch and we will switch to less friendly methods. If no collective labor agreement is concluded in 2022, the tone will have to become firmer in 2023. And that chance is there!

But first a party, and the chance to exchange ideas

A party to celebrate that you stood up for yourself and for your colleagues this year. We celebrate that ING is still a great company, because the employees make the company so beautiful, not the ING-Group board or the shareholders far away. And we agree that 2023 will be an even better year, with a new ING collective labor agreement. As trade union officials, we would like to talk to you to make personal contact, to hear from you what you expect from us in the coming year and to answer any questions that may arise.

We will also ask you to fill a suggestion box - next year will be a year of actions as it looks now and all input is welcome.
