Notification of collective dismissal

H&M will close its customer service department on June 1, 2026, and transfer all operations to an external partner. On November 20, 2025, H&M De Unie informed of its intention to proceed with collective dismissals for nearly 200 employees in Limburg. This means that nearly 200 employees will lose their jobs. This is shocking news. De Unie immediately contacted H&M management about this.

First talks in December 2025

In December 2025, De Unie, together with the AVV union, held a meeting with HR management and the works council of H&M Netherlands. At this point, the details of the reorganization were still strictly confidential.

Although the social plan for H&M Services from 2024 is valid until December 31, 2026, we, as unions and Works Council, have asked H&M to make additional agreements for this specific reorganization to ensure that as many employees as possible can be guided from job to job.

What agreements have we made?

We emphasized the work-to-work guidance for this group and further support in the coming period. H&M was unwilling to open up its social plan for this process, but fortunately was willing to discuss agreements with the unions and the Works Council.

We have agreed on the following:

  • The entire €5.000 outplacement budget is available immediately before the end date for employees who will lose their jobs. Previously, they only received half (€2.500) before the end date and the other half afterward.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (EVC) can be reimbursed with the outplacement budget. EVC offers people with few qualifications the opportunity to convert their work experience into recognized certificates. This makes it easier for people without qualifications to apply for jobs that do require one.
  • All affected employees can receive assistance from union lawyers, whether they are members or not. H&M will offer and schedule this support so that everyone can receive legal assistance during these uncertain times.
  • H&M is taking a proactive role in organizing and offering outplacement, EVC, and legal support to all affected employees. This makes it as easy as possible for employees to access these services.

Collaboration with the Works Council

During the conversations, De Unie and AVV maintained close contact with the Works Council and its legal advisor. In this way, we strengthened each other and tried to mitigate the consequences of this drastic reorganization where possible.

What was striking was the enormous drive and dedication with which the H&M Works Council carries out its work. Despite the negative news, they tried to support the affected employees as best as they could. De Unie has nothing but compliments for the members of the Works Council.
