Professional freight transport: March 8, 2023

March 07 2023

Women worked in the textile industry under appalling conditions. Circumstances that we can hardly imagine nowadays. On March 8, 1922, more than 15 thousand women took to the streets and made a march in protest. Especially at that time, this was something unprecedented and very impressive. Two years later, March 8 was declared International Women's Day. A day to reflect on the position of women, in which working life naturally plays a very prominent role.

De Unie therefore conducted a survey this year

We conducted a survey among female employees in the sector of road transport of professional goods and the rental of mobile cranes. This survey was distributed among more than 9.000 employees and took place over the past two months. The response was quite high and only completed by drivers. We found the answers remarkably positive. Judge yourself!

Answer

  • On average, an 8,9 on a scale of 1 to 10 is given for enjoying your work.
  • Only 14% say they would like more women to become colleagues and 85% say they don't care.
  • The majority is satisfied with the number of hours worked, a small minority (14%) is not completely satisfied.
  • The answer about the remuneration is not so positive, as no less than 58% appear to be dissatisfied with the remuneration!
  • More than 70% think that it is no more difficult for a woman than for a man to do this work, the other small 30% answered neutral. No one has answered this question with a yes.
  • All respondents indicated that they feel safe in their work. In fact, 75% say they feel very safe.
  • More than 70% of the women would recommend other women to do this work as well. Just under 15% would definitely not do this.

Lots of comments

Extensive use has been made of the possibility to post comments. Too many to name here, so here are just the top three of the most mentioned.

  • There must be more and more hygienic facilities.
  • Appropriate work clothes.
  • Women want to be taken seriously if they report malfunctions without first having to be confirmed by a male colleague.

In Summary

In summary, this is a positive image, women enjoy this work, feel safe and would recommend others to do the same. However, the low salary is an item (but of course this does not only apply to women). The three most frequently mentioned comments are points of attention that the parties to the collective labor agreement should immediately address.
