Tata Steel: Majority of members agree to collective bargaining offer

July 14, 2023

On July 6, 2023, the employer made an offer for a new collective labor agreement, even before negotiations have started. De Unie submitted this offer to its members for a vote. On July 11, 2023, I provided an explanation of the offer and its formation in an online members' meeting.

Voting result

The voting period has now closed. A large majority of our members have agreed to the collective bargaining offer. That means that De Unie will sign the new collective labor agreement after the new text is ready.

Some of our members did comment on the difference in wage increases for job grades 6-17 and job grades 18-20. I had already aired that comment to Tata Steel on July 6 after our executive meeting earlier that day. Your employer then slightly adjusted the text of the offer, after which we submitted the offer to a vote.

The offer now includes that we will conduct an investigation into the structure and up-to-dateness of Tata Steel's wage structure in the coming period. Now that a leveling has been applied in two collective labor agreements in succession, the wage structure threatens to become unbalanced. In addition, I get signals that new employees have recently been placed in a higher job group, compared to a few years ago.

In view of the comments of some of our members, De Unie argue in the Technical Consultation (the regular consultation that we as social partners have with each other a number of times a year) to start this investigation after the wage increase of 1 October 2023.
